How football squares work

Football squares uses a ten by ten board with one team assigned to columns and the other to rows. Each axis carries the digits zero through nine. At an agreed checkpoint, take the last digit of each team score and find their intersection. If the column team has 17 points and the row team has 24, the winning cell is column 7 and row 4. This is a score-digit game rather than a prediction of the winning team, and the board still works when the eventual champion loses an earlier quarter.

Fill names before drawing the numbers

Select a square, enter its owner, and assign the name. A person can own more than one square if your group allows it. Keep an entry list so a repeated name is intentional rather than an accidental duplicate. Many groups complete ownership before drawing the axis numbers, which prevents people choosing squares after they know their score digits. The board begins with ordered digits to make editing easy. Use Draw random numbers once entries close, and send the finished version to everyone before kickoff.

Random digits and fair expectations

Drawing numbers shuffles each axis separately and uses every digit exactly once. It does not shuffle the owners, select a winning square in advance, or estimate the likely final score. Different score digits do not have equal football scoring probabilities, so random allocation matters when participants are choosing blind. Repeating the draw after people see their digits changes the agreed allocation. Choose a draw policy before opening entries, record the final board, and do not redraw simply because someone dislikes a combination.

Quarter winners and payout splits

Enter the current score to highlight the matching square. Most pools pay at the end of the first, second, and third quarters, plus the final result, but your group decides the exact checkpoints. Clarify whether the last payment uses regulation time or includes overtime. The payout calculator accepts a total and four percentages that must add to 100. It calculates in integer cents and distributes rounding remainders so the payouts add back to the exact total rather than losing small amounts through rounding.

Print a football squares template or PDF

Use Print or save PDF to open the browser print dialog. Choose a printer for paper copies or Save as PDF for a file. The print stylesheet hides editing controls and surrounding site navigation, leaving the board and its useful labels. A blank board is useful for collecting entries in person; an assigned board is useful as the published reference. Check the preview before printing, especially when long names need smaller text. Short labels or initials are easier to read in a ten by ten grid.

Share a snapshot with your group

A copied link contains the names, team labels, and drawn numbers needed to recreate the board. Anyone who receives it can view that snapshot and edit a separate copy. The link is not a live collaborative database, an entry lock, or a record of payments. Later changes in your tab do not update an older link. Copy and distribute a new link if the board changes, and make the final version obvious. Names are embedded in the URL, so use public-facing labels instead of private contact details.

Agree on the rules before kickoff

Set ownership limits, entry deadlines, unclaimed-square treatment, payout checkpoints, and overtime treatment before the game. Consider what happens if a checkpoint lands on an unclaimed square or a score correction changes the apparent winner. This tool organizes the board and arithmetic; it does not collect money, process entries, or settle disputes. Keep a dated printout or screenshot of the locked board. A clear board and a short written rule sheet make the event easier to follow for participants who have never played squares before.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a free Super Bowl squares generator?

Yes. You can fill the board, draw numbers, calculate splits, print, and copy a share link without an account. The tool does not charge entry fees or collect money. Any arrangements among your group happen separately from the board.

How do I find the winning square?

Use the final digit of each score at your chosen checkpoint. The column team digit selects a column and the row team digit selects a row. Their intersection wins that checkpoint under your published rules.

Can I create a printable football squares PDF?

Yes. Print or save PDF opens your browser print dialog. Choose Save as PDF to make a file. Confirm that all names and the two team labels fit in the preview before distributing the board.

Does a shared board update automatically?

No. A share link restores the names and numbers as they were when copied. If you change an owner or redraw the axes, send a new link. Other people edits affect their own copies.
