Swiss Tournament Generator: Pairings, Standings and Tiebreaks
Generate Swiss rounds without rematches, report wins or draws, and compare standings with Buchholz and Sonneborn-Berger tiebreaks. No account required.
Swiss tournaments keep entrants involved across several rounds rather than eliminating them immediately after a loss. Pairings generally bring players with similar scores together, allowing a large field to produce useful standings without everyone facing every opponent. This generator starts from the entered order, then prefers opponents with nearby points in later rounds. It refuses repeat opponents and avoids giving a player a second bye. The event organizer still decides the round count, any later top cut, and the published policy for exceptional situations.
Enter and identify every player
Use one unique name or handle per line. Labels are used throughout the pairings and standings, so two identical names would make result reporting ambiguous. The tool supports fields from two to sixty-four entrants and keeps results in the current browser tab. Editing the entrant list resets the rounds because existing pairings refer to the original field. Finish registration and verify attendance before generating round one. For larger events, use a tournament service with the operational features your event needs instead of relying on a single local planning sheet.
Generate one round at a time
Report every result in the current round before requesting the next one. The generator uses completed results to build score groups and searches for a full pairing without rematches. It prefers nearby records but may need to pair across score groups to complete a legal round. The search is bounded to keep the browser responsive. If no supported pairing is found, it reports the problem rather than silently allowing a rematch. End the planned event or review the pairing situation manually under the rules you announced.
Wins, draws, losses, and byes
A win earns one point, a draw earns half a point, and a loss earns zero. In an odd field, a bye awards one point without an opponent. The generator prefers the lowest-ranked entrant who has not already received a bye. Byes do not create an opponent for the tiebreak calculations. These conventions are explicit choices for this tool, not universal publisher rules. Card games and chess organizations can use different score values, drop policies, or bye treatment. Confirm compatibility before using a local pairing sheet for a sanctioned competition.
Buchholz and Sonneborn-Berger
The standings sort first by points, then Buchholz, then Sonneborn-Berger, with original entry order as a stable final fallback. Buchholz is the sum of opponents points and provides an estimate of schedule strength. Sonneborn-Berger weights each opponent points by the result against them: full value for a win, half for a draw, and none for a loss. These values change as opponents finish later rounds. A player can therefore move within a tied score group without playing another match, simply because their earlier opponents earned more points.
Correct results before pairing onward
If a result was entered incorrectly, change it in the relevant round. The generator removes all later rounds because their pairings depended on the previous standings. This is safer than keeping a draw that was produced from an invalid record. Explain that behavior to anyone helping with score entry. Keep a copied or printed round sheet if you need a reference before making a correction. A local browser tab is not a durable multi-organizer audit log, so designate one person to maintain the authoritative copy.
Plan the cut and share the output
Use the Swiss round calculator as a starting point for event length and the top cut calculator to explore the approximate qualification boundary. Neither tool replaces your actual standings. At the end of the announced rounds, apply the published tiebreak order and move the qualifying players into the playoff stage. Copy pairings and standings for a group message, or print the current sheet. Results remain local to the tab; the copied text is a snapshot and does not update when a later score changes. Save important output before closing or refreshing the page.
Frequently asked questions
Will this Swiss generator repeat opponents?
It refuses rematches and searches for a complete legal pairing. If the search cannot find one within its bound, it shows a message instead of quietly creating a repeat. You may need to end the event or review the format manually.
What happens with an odd player count?
One entrant receives a one-point bye. The generator prefers a low-ranked player who has not received a bye before. That bye does not create a fictional opponent or add opponent points to tiebreaks.
Can I enter draws?
Yes. Draws award half a point to each player and contribute half the opponent score to Sonneborn-Berger. If your event uses another points system, the local standings here will not match that rulebook.
What happens after a score correction?
Changing a result removes every later round. Those rounds depended on the previous standings, so regenerating them avoids preserving pairings created from an incorrect result. Copy the sheet first if you need a reference.
